Seat Bolt Recall Affects Select Volkswagen Models

Volkswagen has made it into the news again with a recall of certain Tiguan and Jetta models due to an issue regarding the seat bolt on those vehicles. The recall has affected nearly 90 cars and SUVs thus far, and marks a major safety risk for owners who, unbeknownst to them, weren’t driving in a vehicle that was as safe as they may have believed.

Here’s what you should know:

Seat Bolts & The Volkswagen Recall

Seat bolts are an essential, yet often an under-recognized component to most vehicles. Their function is simple: keep the seat in place. Without them, the seats on the 2021 Tiguan and Jetta models are able to move freely back and forth. One can understand why that may be an issue during a car accident, when stability can save a victim’s life.

The Volkswagen recall pertains to vehicles assembled between October 20 and 27, 2020. According to the American National Road Safety Administration (NHTSA), seat bolts to the Jettas and long-wheelbase Tiguans were removed during production, but were never replaced before the next stage of assembly.

What To Do

If you bought a Volkswagen long-wheelbase Tiguan or Jetta recently, it’s important for you to go to your nearest dealer and request an inspection of your vehicle. Your safety should be the top priority, and the dealers are there to make sure each vehicle that left the lot without seat bolts has the error corrected. The recall is expected to be postponed until April 2nd, 2021, as service stations have yet to receive replacement parts.

If you have recently been involved in an accident and you were behind the wheel of a newly purchased Volkswagen Tiguan or Jetta, you may be due compensation for your injuries. The absence of seat bolts is a genuinely alarming issue – one that the manufacturer is liable for should it directly lead to injury. If you recall from our blog, The Three Types of Product Liability Claims, this type of product liability is known as “defective manufacturing.” The manufacturer – in this case, Volkswagen – failed to create a product up to the safety specifications that were advertised to the consumer.
