Following several years of petitioning, the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration announced a recall on over 100 million General Motors vehicles worldwide, six million in the U.S. This large-scale recall is due to a dangerous design flaw involving Takata airbag inflators. This order by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration calls for the affected US vehicles to be recalled immediately for repair after 27 deaths have been linked to this defect.
Which Models are Affected by the Recall and What Happens Next?
General Motors is recalling multiple vehicle models dating all the way back to 2007 and up through 2014, including GM full-size pickup trucks and SUVs. Affected vehicle models include GM’s top-selling vehicle, the Chevrolet Silverado. See the full list of affected vehicle models:
- Chevrolet Silverado 1500, 2500 and 3500 pickups, GMC Sierra 1500, 2500, Chevrolet Tahoe, Suburban, Avalanche, Cadillac Escalade, and the GMC Yukon
The main issue with these vehicles involves a dangerous design flaw with the Takata airbag inflators. Takata airbags use volatile ammonium nitrate to create small explosions, causing airbags to fill during a crash. In some cases, when exposed to humidity or heat, this chemical can deteriorate and explode with too much force, leading to the destruction of a metal canister and spewing shrapnel. General Motors has 30 days to notify vehicle owners about this issue and begin the recall process of all vehicles using Takata airbags.
